How to Split Areas

I drew a line similar to the red line shown here to split up this large Area. However, the App would not let me split it and continued to see this as one large Area. Can you please explain if I did something wrong? If not, please fix this feature.

What process did you try to use to split the Area? How did you go about it?

I just did one of these splits a few days ago, worked fine to remove an extra bit of an Area I changed my mind about including.

Note that it doesn’t split the Area – yet. It does cleave it, but you can keep only one piece (they plan to change this to allow you to keep both pieces).

It had a very simple walkthrough/instructions that I followed. Asked me to drive Yarbo from one edge (with an overlap on the edge) to the other. I did and created a similar red line as I showed in my image. Then, the Yarbo App ignored my line and asked me to select the entire Area. I did this process twice and got the same results.

Odd. You did the Edit Area thing, mapped the blue line from outside one border to outside the other, completed the edit, and I see what it shows on the screen there – it thinks it split the area, but it shows only one piece. And this happened for you twice…?

My initial thought is did the rover have GPS when you started the process, and did it start drawing the blue line? I’ve told it to map an Area, only to look down after a while and either lose GPS or have nothing drawn, then have to repeat.

Next thought: Did the prior split operation (you did one before this, right?) leave cruft? Would restarting the App help?

Else I’m not sure. I can’t try it myself right now without mucking up my lawn at the mo…rain, rain, rain. But, yeah, I did one of these splits a few days ago, no problem.

It was about a week ago when I did this. So, going from memory, I think it did have GPS. Also, the screenshot suggests it did as well. I did have a solid line from one boundary edge to the next. I drop past the boundary lines per the instructions.

This is the first split I’ve ever attempted. So, that’s why I’m wondering if it’s a user error. But, the process seems fairly straightforward.

Nope, it doesn’t seem like user error. I’m scratching my head, as I just had this very thing work OK.

Tell you what - as this was a week ago, make sure you’ve gotten the latest firmware update in the rover (3.8.4) and latest version of the App (from your App store), and maybe give it another shot (you can check the Data Center firmware, too, but that one was a while ago, and you probably have it). Can you create a small test Area somewhere like in the middle of your driveway and try splitting that? If that works, try other Edit Area variations to expand it, too, just as practice. That way you’re sure your environment is up to date and the functionality is OK, then give your larger Area another shot. I’ll be interested to know the results!

What do you think?

If something keeps failing, especially if it works great in the test Area but fails on your real Area, you can turn on the Record button for the logs in Diagnostics, run through the process to capture the failure, turn the logging off, then log a ticket with Support with the timestamp and some map screenshots and diagnostic screen screenshots.

Thank you for reaching out. After confirming with our support team, we haven’t encountered similar cases where areas fail to split. We’ll need to investigate your case further. As Ken suggested, could you please record the issue and submit a support ticket with the timestamp and any additional details? We appreciate you bringing this to our attention, and we thank you for your understanding!
