Battery Temperature Problems

My battery temp regularly hits the 50°C cutoff when charging with ambient temps about 90°F This occurs at 50-60% SOC. This makes the mower unusable during daytime hours. To make things worse, when it’s unable to charge it sits there continues to discharge.

I have have 4 acres and it needs most of the available time to mow. What, if anything, can be done to improve this? I live in PA, by no means the hottest part of the US. I can only imagine what happens to users in the southern US.

Some people have tried shelters although that can affect GPS and isn’t recommended. One guy put white reflective wrap on the battery cover. Someone on discord suggested rigging up an automated water sprayer. Someone else suggested a cheap solar powered fan installed on the battery cover. I’d love to hear @Yarbo-Forum thoughts on this problem and any potential solutions or suggestions.

I have mostly been mowing in the afternoon so haven’t run into a problem (although it’s still getting hotter…) but as soon as I got this thing I thought man that’s going to get hot in the sun. I was thinking of getting a can of white or yellow plasti dip and spraying the cover… they should have reversed the color scheme probably.

It works great for the snow and looks cool, but yeah. I think it needs some active cooling that turns on at 45 when charging.

This hasnt been a problem for me yet (yarbo isnt working for others reasons). Ive seen this brought up a bunch now that the summer temps are setting it. I live in MI and we are getting regular temps between 80-90s. Ambient temps alone are enough to shut this thing down. Anything in a closed container is gonna get a heck of a lot hotter. I doubt even a white cover would help this thing. Will take one hell of a creative mod around this issue. More or less a serious design flaw imo.

I’m in the same boat today. 93f outside today. Mowed most of a work area this morning. Got down to 20 percent and went to charge. Battery is at 54c. It managed to charge up to 40% off and on today but it is just dropping setting on the charger. It’s down to 37%. So its up a little and down a little while its hot.

The good news is the grass isn’t growing as fast when it’s this hot.

It was 97 here today and I still managed to get 50% charged before it shutdown to cool. This was after running a 5.5 hour job. Battery temp was under 50 the whole time it was working. Around 43 and 45.

Having a spare battery and a charging cable or just the charging cable can really help in this situation. While one battery wouldn’t charge due to temps, I swapped in a spare and sent it back out to work and put it on the manual wired charger inside the garage. Once it cools down it will charge up and be good to go. Meanwhile I’m still mowing.

Have you priced the battery? (That’s rhetorical. )

Direct to battery charger and extra battery, sold from yarbo? how does yarbo handle a battery swap during a pause in work plan?

Prototype number 1.

Reflectix. An RVer’s hack. (Available at your local home improvement store. )

Dropped from 54 to 50. Temp is down to 89f so I’ll likely be mowing again soon.

do you have one of those doghouses over your charger for shade?

I do not… yet…

I have the dog house but the battery still gets hot. It is the charging of a hot battery that really sets the temps soaring. Not a good thing for a expensive unit. I can’t believe they did not test this stuff in summer heat. 85 degree day and only mowed for a few hours and then it was done for the rest of the day…

When it’s 93… I’m done for the day too.

Before my first core bricked to replacement last week, i was treating it to my semi airconditioned (77-79 degree) garage/workbench and using the manual charger. My charger pad takes a beating from the sun and gets no breeze. I was trying to being good to my core and battery.

Correct. In my situation I’ve not had to swap mid plan most times but most of the time the plan will survive a reboot and hard power cycle just fine. If not, I note the percentage and restart the plan from just before the previous percentage.

@Yarbo-Forum , can you please see if we need a bug report for the app? Mine is reporting a physical misalignment on the charger, when there is none, but the battery is hot.

I expect that support is going to greatly appreciate a hotfix of the app for that fix, since people will report what the actual problem is.

Note that I did get a different popup error, earlier, once, for about a quarter of a second immediately after automatic docking. I have no idea what it said because it was instantly overwritten by this one, and it hasn’t appeared since.

Cheers!

If I try to force a charge, I get the misalignment error too. But I’m POSITIVE it’s aligned correctly. Its just HOT

It was probably auto recharge failed. I don’t remember if I saw it here or on discord but Yarbo is aware of the error message being incorrect and I assume it will be in the next hotfix and or app update.

That would have saved me about 40 minutes of angry f*ckery this afternoon, lol.
