Camera Calibration (Beta)

Anyone tried the Camera Calibration? Any improvements or side effects?

If I calibrate the cameras will Yarbo proceed through my gate rather than whine about an obstacle?

Curious myself what is camera calibration for?

I don’t think I have any other cameras that suffer from thermal expansion and contraction. But maybe they too suffer from this affliction. Maybe it’s a stereoscopic issue?

Seems like something that should be built into the docking station for self calibration.

I think it’s more about small variations that could be based on different hardware versions. I think this will be really important as they move more towards visual based navigation and other vision specific features.

Hi Ken,

You can try running camera calibration to keep your cameras performing at the best possible accuracy. If the camera has been affected by thermal expansion and contraction, calibration can help reduce false detections. In your specific case, though, Yarbo may still recognize the gate as an obstacle.

What indications as a user might I notice that would indicate to me that my cameras need calibration?

False detections of obstructions? (I.e. point cloud red blobs?)

@ken.w.gregory Hi Ken, sorry for the delayed response—and I’d like to revise my earlier reply. After confirming with our team, this feature is typically used only when there are camera false detections. In normal cases, there’s no need to run camera calibration. Unless you have guidance from our support team to complete this step, or you determine the false detection is not due to current obstacle-detection limitations (such as false detection of shadows), you do not need to use this feature.

Thank you for the clarification. I appreciate it.

I just tried the camera calibration but it doesn’t appear to initiate the process. I just hold the grid in front of the camera and it does nothing. The only notification on the app I get is if the paper is undetected. What am I doing wrong?

I’ve seen a couple of reports basically saying the same thing. I definitely wouldn’t do this without supports direction. Being a new feature in beta I think it has the potential to cause more harm than good.

Why take the time to develop and expose a feature that 1) End users aren’t supposed to use 2) Doesn’t work, 3) Isn’t documented anywhere?

Hi @cobradunn , thanks for the question. The camera calibration feature is currently in a beta stage, and we’re continuing to optimize it. We do need to make this feature available to end users because we’ve received a number of cases where false obstacle detections were caused by camera alignment issues, and calibration can help resolve those.

That said, we agree that clearer guidance is needed. Once this feature is further refined, we will provide official documentation and instructions to ensure it’s easy to use. Thanks for your patience and feedback as we improve it.
