🌟 Community Spotlight #2: Tow Mode — How Would You Use It, and What Concerns Do You Have?

Tow Mode has probably been one of the most talked-about feature requests here for a while, so let’s talk about it.

If Tow Mode becomes available, what would you actually use it for?

What kind of yard work do you think it would be most useful for? Hauling tools? Pulling a cart? Moving branches, soil, mulch, or something else?

Also, what do you think Tow Mode would need to do well to be genuinely useful? And what challenges do you think might come with it?

Curious to hear how everyone sees it — both the exciting use cases and the practical stuff that would need to be considered.

I’d use it to tow an aerator. Hauling stuff should already work with “follow me” or paths.

I picture creating an area, selecting tow mode, and having as much as the area covered as possible using safe turns.

My most anticipated use case for Tow Mode is to pull lawn equipment such as an aerator, spreader, roller, etc.

From my perspective, in order for the Tow Mode to be useful and effective, I think the following are Requirements…

  • Ability to save custom settings for each yard implement being used with Tow Mode

  • User definable width and length of towed object

  • Customizable rules for turning radius geometry (how tight can Yarbo safely turn)

  • Customizable row width (the opposite of overlap settings. How much width should there be between each row)

  • Yarbo’s speed while task is underway. (Customized for each yard implement)

  • User defined starting and ending points for each area.

  • Where does Yarbo stop and park after area is complete. (Can’t dock, so where does Yarbo go)

That’s all I can think of at the moment. Please feel free to add things to the list that I overlooked.

Plan on using it with;

  1. a broadcast granular spreader
  2. occasionally with a (rented) dethatcher
  3. possibly a (rented) aerator
  4. will like to mock-up a simple flat platform on wheels upon which my garbage bins will rest (96 gal & 64 gal bins). Will have Yarbo pull the platform to the bottom of the driveway in the morning and return after garbage pickup.

As @rgloverii mentions it will need to save customer settings for each attachment. See he excellent list above.

Great idea. I would recommend submitting this as a feature request.

Thank you for sharing such detailed and thoughtful feedback. We really appreciate your input, and I’ve passed all of these suggestions along to our product team for consideration.

You’ve outlined several very practical requirements that could make Tow Mode much more useful in real-world applications. We also welcome everyone to continue adding to this list if there are other ideas or needs that should be considered.

I’ll steal/reiterate from @rgloverii
in order for the Tow Mode to be useful and effective, I think the following are Requirements…

  • Ability to save custom settings for each yard implement being used with Tow Mode

  • User definable width and length of towed object

    • maybe axle/wheel locations so tail swing and radius can be calculated automatically?
    • Also they make those poly slides that could be pretty useful behind Yarbo.
  • Customizable rules for turning radius geometry (how tight can Yarbo safely turn)

    • Override from calculated value, warnings if below calculated value or data for calculated value not entered
  • Yarbo’s speed while task is underway. (Customized for each yard implement)

  • User defined starting and ending points for each area.

  • Where does Yarbo stop and park after area is complete. (Can’t dock, so where does Yarbo go)

    • could Yarbo park facing forwards on the dock???

My current thought for use case is for towing around a trailer for yardwork, hauling supplies maybe dirt/mulch, leaves, sticks, etc. Next up a way to integrate with actuators or other controls so we can automate dumping for leaf collectors, trailers, dethatchers, etc

This could be accomplished already using waypoints, unless I’m misunderstanding the use case.

More automated, either hand/voice commands or a tap on the app. Then I stay working on the project, Yarbo drives away, dumps the load and comes back empty.

Mentioned prior, and restated here.

Features:

  • Give me access to a steady supply of 12v from the core that I can connect my tow accessories to.
  • +1 to @rgloverii and @rcguymike

Use Cases:

  • Take the trash cans to the curb
  • Trasport things in wagons, flat beds
  • yard work (aerating, dethatching, spreading, spraying, imaging)

I can’t wait till I can do this! I tried doing it with a pathway, but I couldn’t get it to work reliably without backing up and jackknifing the wagon.

+1 for all the above.

Be able to enter a series of waypoints with a limited set of “actions” at each waypoint.

For example, continue to the next waypoint, Stop at waypoint until told to proceed to next waypoint, wait X minutes and proceed to next waypoint.

The example action set above is not exhaustive.

Be able to name and save these groups of waypoints and actions for future use.

Be able to engage tow mode with any and all attachments. I should be able to tow with the snow blower to spread salt. I should be able to pull a wagon with the leaf blower and the mower not just with the assist module.

Great idea!! That would make Waypoints much more useful.

@rcguymike @hidekigebken Thanks for adding to the Tow Mode suggestions — really appreciate all the detailed input!
