Mowing height and speed

What height and speed do you guys mow at?

So far I have mine mowing at the min 2.7" I wouldn’t mind going lower but I have no interest in voiding the warranty. I would like to know if going lower it would actually cut the dang white clover heads off. Maybe the pro will do a better job. They advertise it can cut pretty low hopefully it doesn’t have some warranty voiding height also.
My mow speed is fast I’m probably going to test medium to see the cut quality. Fast is OK.
What about overlap? I’m doing zero it makes the best looking lines. I’ve tried both 4 and 8 but those don’t look as nice.
Does anyone use anything but loose on the module gap?

I use slowest, 4 inch overlap, loose at 3 inches, 3.5, and 4.

3 inches seems to be the best looking for my type of grass (Tall Fescue).

Slowest gives the best quality cut and less build up (IMHO).

Loose is the default and I doubt there are good enough reasons to run anything but loose. If you are clogging and don’t want to remove the blade guards, then maybe run medium.

Overlap at zero, you will have missed grass. GPS fluctuates and the robot isn’t always accurate with its pathing either. 4 inches is typically fine. 8 for slopes if you are missing grass.

You can cut lower than 2.7. It won’t void your warranty. BUT, if you have cool season grasses, then it’s shorter than what is recommended. You should cut at the optimal height for your type of grass. IF you cut lower, it will increase your chance of hitting something. That is what the warning is for. Know that you are more likely to break a disc or pop a blade off. Have spares on hand if you do this.

I’m cutting at 2.7. Fastest speed and 8 inch overlap. Module loose. I went to 8 inch overlap to get a better look. Yarbo was mohawking the lawn. (Missing sections).

And up’ed the speed to bring the mow time down. It’s decent looking now.

I did finally take the remove the blade guards and that pretty much cured my clogging.

I’m mowing about 3 acres and it’s taking about 4 days to get done. (Maintenance and my slacking.)

Grass is growing fast and it’s raining a lot. Hopefully after the firmware update I can reduce the overlap and slow the speed.

I hope the responses from others have provided you with some helpful insights.

Regarding the warranty issue, when the cutting height is set below 2.7 inches, the cutting discs and blades are more likely to come into contact with hard objects on the lawn, which can lead to wear and tear. For this reason, we generally recommend not setting it too low.

Please note that the warranty does not cover damage to the cutting discs and blades, but it does not affect the warranty for other parts. See the attached pictures for more details on the warranty.

I use loose and have been working my grass down .2" per cut from 3.5" to 2.5". I might let it a bit longer with the worst of the heat but had been trying to choke out some weedy species that shoot up quick.

I used medium at 3.5". Thought was to help clogging as it hadn’t been mowed since the previous core died. I used loose for all the rest as i figured clogging would be minimal with daily short cuts. The main clogging issues happen as a result of leaves leading to grass build up. I pick up the magnolia leaves but one manages to drop and clog about half the time.

I have a mix of centipede and Bermuda mostly. My back is fenced and shaded with 60% Bermuda, 40% St. Augustine. I’m letting them work it out as both are full.

Used to go with 2 3/8" with the rider and push mower, but I’m learning from @bryan.wheeler, Scott G., and others that a 3" grass height is generally about right to start, even higher may be appropriate as the weather gets drier and hotter.

The other settings I use on the Yarbo are pretty much the defaults. I vary the mowing angle – Bryan made that not-very-subtle demand that I do…I mean kind suggestion…and he’s right. Where I do the Parallel 10 degree automatic rotation you really don’t see any tracks, and where I do Diamond you see waffles (stupid clover!). But taking a step back I’m pretty pleased, especially since I’ve mowed exactly zero times so far this season, except a little with the push mower here and there, with the GF doing some weed whacking.

If y’all have lawn questions – or Yarbo questions – the Product Pioneers have a weekly get together on Wednesday evenings (US time), and we’re all invited.

  1. Join Yarbo Community on Discord: Yarbo Community
  2. Look for the Event along the left side.
  3. Attend. You’ll need audio. You can use the chat there to type in your questions, or you can put your hand up and ask and discuss with your microphone. New folks are asked to introduce themselves by singing their first name or showing Yarbo-themed refrigerator art.

Your refrigerator art…next time please use crayon. I don’t know what you used, but it smelled funny! :joy:

No joy on the community link. It says it’s a new login location and check my email. I do get an email and click the link and the url is invalid.

I’m still a little confused by the cutting height discrepancy between my rider and the Yarbo. I’m set to a 2.1" Yarbo height to get the equivalent 3" height my rider is set to. I get it that the Yarbo doesn’t create up uplift the rider blades do, but almost an inch difference in setting?

Hmmm…No idea, @ken.w.gregory. Do you already have an account on Discord and can log in? This is Discord’s stuff, “should just work.” Ahem. Yep. 100%.

I’ve never measured the grass height, just went kinda by looks when I mowed (not knowing anything about grass), and read somewhere that 2 3/8" was about right (but may not be right for lawn health, as it turns out?). Anyway, that’s what I put the rider at.

I know that with Yarbo I’m a little higher than the rider, and it looks different, yes, and I’m guessing it’s because Yarbo won’t get what’s not sticking up because there’s no lift. This is probably why you mow at a high height with the rider (lift) and a lower height with Yarbo (no lift) to get the same overall look.

Yes? No?

Matches my feelings on it.

I’ll add I don’t feel like its linear. The high heights leave a larger delta in layed over length than do the shorter heights depending on your grass type.
