Adding more studs

Has anyone added more studs to the winter tracks then what’s there now?

Not that anyone has posted in the forum. Most people post about removing them.

I removed them and never put them back. I some time have slippage, but not a big problem, so I avoid damaging the driveway

Agreed. In my opinion, I think they hurt more than they help unless you have an entirely iced over driveway.

Hi there, we haven’t seen any cases of users adding extra studs to the winter tracks here so far. We also don’t recommend doing this, as we can’t guarantee the performance or safety after such modifications.

So you could get better traction without them? My driveway has a slope, and the snowblower has had no problem going up and down. This past storm, we did get early wet snow that turned into a ice layer, and had had zero traction and constantly stuck.

That’s my gut feeling because you have more surface area in contact vs not when they are installed. I know many experienced users who don’t run them at all and have no issues and they get all types of snow. Mine is mostly wet, some ice if I don’t get it cleaned up good and it refreezes. So far no issues for me in that situation. Biggest issue I had was a snow wedge formed underneath the plow and that didn’t help with track slippage and clearing. That wasn’t a track issue though.

Make sense with the surface area. I will give it a try.

This theory is kinda based on having a bed of nails, for studs you want them to dig in.

But also if you are on concrete or something hard the stickiness of the rubber track over a larger surface area as Brian mentions might do better than multiple point loads.

Would be interesting to see what circumstances Yarbo’s internal tests determined studs to be ideal, and under what circumstances just the tracks were sufficient.

That said, it would seem that Yarbo initially believed the studs to be of such value that they are already pre-installed on the tracks. If they believed them to be only for edge cases like ice on the driveway, I would think they would have left them uninstalled.

I could see it as a packaging or doing the user a favor thing. Easier to remove studs than install them.

Yes, it’s this. Despite being preinstalled it was never Yarbo’s intention for users to use them on anything but ice. At least, that’s my belief and what seems to line up with their documentation.
