Zero-turns with Smart Turn enabled?!?

After “hot fix” 3.8.16, Yarbo is now performing zero-turn movements even though Smart turn is enabled for both return to docking station and for the area configuration. In particular, I notice it while cutting the first pass of the perimeter.

This issue with Yarbo performing zero-turn movements in an area that is configured to not do so is quite frustrating, and doesn’t seem to be getting better. For a whiled Yarbo was performing micro adjustments, moving back and forth, to change its position, which was the correct movement to reduce wear on grass. Now it’s just gotten worse again.

In addition, any inside corner that Yarbo encounters, it just turns in place. Plenty of space to perform a different maneuver, but no, it just performs a 90 degree, tearing up the lawn.

Yarbo, what is it going to take for you to complete the “smart turn” feature??? Yet again, another half-implemented feature.

We’re really sorry for the inconvenience this has caused. If Smart Turn is enabled, the device should normally follow the Smart Turn both when returning to the docking station and in the area. Since this is not happening as expected, we will need to further investigate the issue to find the root cause.

Could you please submit a support ticket with the detailed information and the estimated timestamp of the issue so that our support team can look into it further?

We truly appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to resolve this!

@Yarbo-Forum I have a support ticket going, thank you. I will post some details here for anyone interested in the issue.

There are 3 issues with zero-turn movement:

  1. When a pathway overlaps an area that is configured for smart-turns. When Yarbo needs to use a pathway to get to another area, it will navigate over to the pathway (performing smart-move turns as expected), however when it reaches the pathway it will perform a zero-turn movement to align itself with the pathway, even when this is within the area configures for smart turns.

  2. When performing the first pass of a perimeter cut, sometimes Yarbo will adjust its direction as it is driving forward (as it should), and other times it will stop, perform a slight zero-turn to adjust direction, and then continue moving again. Note, when the area was being mapped, never did I perform one of these zero-turn maneuvers. My movements with Yarbo were always fluid, keeping constant motion forward as I would have it turn to adjust direction.

  3. Inside corners. Yarbo at the moment simply cannot handle inside corners. Your best best is to map out a sweeping arc, hopefully large enough where Yarbo will not stop and just zero-turn (sometimes large turns) to redirect. Not only does this ruin the grass, but there is also a large area of the corner not getting cut. Inside corners are a completely undeveloped part of Yarbo’s navigation at the moment. Make that inside corner too sharp, and Yarbo will just stop, turn 90 degrees, and start going again. We can all imagine some maneuvers Yarbo could take to accomplish cutting grass in an inside corner (90 degrees or more).

Offtopic, but some of these inside corners can be handled with a Dead-End from each direction. HOWEVER, the reverse direction can be hazardous due to wall climbing if it goes off-course. You can generally get away with it over a shorter distance, with a fair standoff from the wall.

Cheers

@steve thanks for tip! This totally works. At least we have a work around until corners are supported.

@Steve @jeremyj114 be careful with dead ends that are within areas and have turns in them. When backing, Yarbo assumes that since it is in a known area that it can use the whole area to smart turn. Keep them straight if you can or make sure that if they have turns that you give enough room for it to smart turn when backing out.
